Inside Iron Ridge's UFO

The IronRidge UFO (Universal Fastening Object) arrives fully-assembled and fully-lubricated, and features a low-profile circular clamp that is attractive and eliminates the need to orient the clamp as it is fastened. Instead, the circular clamp spins down and lands in perfect position on module frames.

The UFO also possesses an advanced T-bolt that allows it to stand freely in the rail while modules are placed. This completely eliminates the need for one person to position clamps as another person installs modules. Instead, the UFO allows one person to do both; then, as he or she fastens the UFO, an integrated Nylok patch auto-rotates and locks the T-bolt in perfect position in the rail.

SolarWorld Launches Bifacial Solar Module

Bifacial is back. Gone are the days of the $4/watt HIT bifacial modules that some of you may remember from years ago, commonly found on niche carports and awning structures. SolarWorld has launched its Bisun module, which generates electricity both from direct exposure to solar radiation on the front side of the module as well as reflected sunlight on the back side. While bifacial technology has existed for years, SolarWorld has developed a way to manufacture bifacial cells by adjusting three steps in its p-type, passive emitter rear cell (PERC) manufacturing process. Using standard materials and manufacturing processes enables SolarWorld to offer Bisun modules to the mass market at competitive prices, from commercial rooftops to ground-mounted solar farms.

Tapping into Small Commercial Solar

Solar is growing, and there’s no downtrend expected anytime soon.

According to the latest U.S. Solar Market Insight Report from SEIA, the U.S. installed 7,260 megawatts of solar in 2015, bringing up total installed capacity to 27.4 gigawatts.

Effective Grounding: Oregon's New Frontier

Oregon’s two largest utilities, Pacific Power and Portland General Electric, which jointly provide 70% of the state’s electricity, started requiring a majority of three-phase commercial photovoltaic (PV) installations to include effective grounding. They are joining a handful of U.S. utilities that already require it. Why is this number growing? With the increase of PV generation on the grid, utilities are growing more concerned about the risk of temporary overvoltage (TOV) possibilities on their lines. A distribution system that is not effectively grounded is significantly more susceptible to harm from TOV than a system that is. Significant TOV can cause great damage to distribution systems and connected equipment, both utility and customer owned, while presenting potential hazards to persons near their lines. Effective grounding uses impedance grounding to limit the fault current while allowing a limited and safer amount of overvoltage.

Mapdwell expanding coverage to Portland

Energy Trust of Oregon is pleased to announce that Mapdwell will be expanding the coverage of its online rooftop-solar mapping tool to include the City of Portland, in addition to the currently available map of Washington County. Mapdwell Solar System is a free, online tool that helps residential and commercial customers estimate the solar potential of their rooftops based on modeling and weather simulation data. This expansion will add an additional 450,000 homes and businesses to the map, and identify gigawatts of additional rooftop solar potential in the region.

As proud advocates of solar energy, we all desire a higher penetration of the technology in the energy mix of our society. In order to achieve this goal, one must look at different aspects of a solar system to increase its attractiveness. Over the past years, technology and policy improvements have helped make the solar industry safer and more cost effective. Although some advancements are more significant than others (e.g. the ITC extension), it is the sum of all these developments that help shape our industry to become a more compelling energy source. In this article, I would like to focus on one technology improvement that is not only changing the residential market, but also expanding to other sectors— the integration of power optimizers into modules.
